Sheepdog Trials

Sheepdog Trials will take place throughout the day, (depending on entry) in the field adjoining the Show Field. This will enable our visitors to witness the bonding of man and dog, so essential to sheep farming on the fells

Serious competition is taking place so please do not enter the trial field or distract the sheep or dogs (let alone the shepherd) as you watch the control of the Herdwick Sheep, a breed that has a very determined mind of its own.

Hound Trails

This is a major Lakeland sport which takes place between March and October using specially bred Hounds, and has a very keen following throughout the Lake District.
The Hounds follow a specially laid trail of aniseed and paraffin over the adjoining fells which tests their scenting skill and racing ability over rough fell land.

Invitation Hand Clipping Competition

Six contestants will be invited to each hand clip 3 woolled Herdwick Ewes in the Main Ring to be judged on the basis of Best clipped and Best tied fleece.

Our visitors should note that normally all sheep have been clipped by this time of the year but unclipped sheep who have missed a gather can still be found on the fells.

Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling

For the benefit of our visitors this is another sport very special to Lakeland and our Meet would be severely lacking without its presence. Indeed it has proved to be one of the most popular events at our Meet.

Whilst all comers are welcome to enter, the wrestlers’ traditional costume of vest, long pants, briefs and socks will be seen and gives scope for individuality. This year the prize for the best individual costume is being awarded with judging by our Joint President, Pam Truckle.

All can enter the wrestling, so please feel free to take up the challenge.

The bouts are judged on the best of three falls, a fall being the first wrestler to touch the ground with anything apart from his/her feet.

Tug-of-War ( Open Entry )

We provide the rope, you provide the muscle.
Come forward with your teams for entry up to 8 a side please with a team name. No sex bars.

The Committee thank Joseph Relph, Stuart Bland and Stanley Jackson for the use of their fields and the National Trust for their consent to the use of Yew Tree Farm.

A big thank you also to the Judges, Stewards, Keswick Lions Club and not least the band of helpers from the valley who willingly come forward each year and without whom this event would not be possible.
